  • Location: Armenia

Set against the imposing backdrop of Mount Ararat, Khor Virap is one of Armenia’s most famous monasteries. Its name means something like “deep dungeon” and refers to the legend of Gregory the Illuminator, who is said to have been imprisoned here for twelve years.

The site is closely connected to the Christianization of Armenia. According to tradition, after his release, Gregory became the first head of the Armenian Church and played a decisive role in Armenia becoming the first country to adopt Christianity as its state religion in AD 301.

Today, Khor Virap is particularly famous for its spectacular setting. On clear days, the snow-capped Mount Ararat rises dramatically behind the monastery – one of the most iconic views in Armenia.

For us, Khor Virap is more than just a historic site: it is one of those places where Armenia’s landscape, history, and unique atmosphere come together in a truly memorable way.
