Naryn, an old garrison town in the heart of Kyrgyzstan, lies on the river of the same name. The town does not have much to offer, but it serves as a starting point for journeys into the surrounding breathtaking landscapes of the Tien Shan mountains. Naryn is located on one of the two roads through which trade between Kyrgyzstan and China is conducted. Heading south, one can reach China through the Torugart Pass at 3,752 meters. The Naryn River is the country's most water-rich and longest river, known for its turquoise color in autumn and winter. In spring and summer, it is filled with sediment from snowmelt and is usually murky.
