Savnob is located in the middle of the Bartang Valley, approximately halfway between the Damir Highway in the west near Rushan and the Pamir Highway near Karakul. The village is spectacularly situated, with the 5,990-meter-high Lapnazar towering above it. A few kilometers above the village lies the famous Sarez Lake, which is dammed by the Usoi Dam—the highest natural dam in the world. There is an ancient fortress, historic cave dwellings, and, most importantly, a wealth of traditional local life. A small power plant supplies the village with electricity, and the local school provides education for primary-age children. Several guesthouses are available, and staying in the village for more than a day is definitely worthwhile.
