The border river Panj, meaning "five," forms the boundary between Afghanistan in the south and Tajikistan in the north in the Pamir region. It flows westward and later becomes the Amu Darya. It carries meltwater from many glaciers of the Pamirs and the Hindu Kush and was originally supposed to flow into the Aral Sea. However, due to intensive agriculture in Uzbekistan, the water no longer reaches there.
