The Sarmishsay Petroglyph Site in Uzbekistan is one of the most significant prehistoric rock art galleries in Central Asia. It is located in the picturesque gorge of the Sarmishsay Valley on the southern edge of the Nuratau Mountains, near the city of Navoi.
With over 10,000 rock engravings created over millennia, the site offers fascinating insights into the lives of early cultures. The oldest petroglyphs date back to the Neolithic period (around 8000 BCE) and depict hunting scenes, animals such as wild goats and aurochs, as well as mystical symbols. Later engravings from the Bronze Age and Antiquity illustrate ritual practices and social structures.
On our Uzbekistan MTB tour, we complete the crossing of the Nuratau and Aktau mountain ranges right here after a long descent.
